Youth-Boosting Make-Up Tricks

Skin: Make Primer a Must

Think primers seem pointless? Think again. Unlike moisturizers, they have smoothing ingredients that fill in fine lines, making them look less obvious. Why not consider one with color-correcting benefits so it evens out your skin tone, too?

Skin: Go Dewy (Not Dry) With Foundation

Easy-to-blend cream-foundation formulas seamlessly cover fine lines. Fake the complexion-perfecting benefits of a soft-lit Instagram filter by adding a dab of cream or liquid highlighter just at the top of your cheekbones, blending back toward your temples. You'll look naturally luminous

Skin: Brush on Foundation

The ultimate game changer. A short, dense foundation brush helps skin gently absorb liquid formulas, so you get good coverage yet look like you have nothing on

Skin: Finish the Look With Concealer

If you usually reach for concealer first, reorder your routine. Start with foundation, then just target the areas that need extra coverage. You'll be amazed at how much less concealer you pack on.

Eyes: Start with Liner

Line eyes before swiping on shadow. If you put shadow on first, you drag the liner through the color, messing up both. And reach for long-wear gel liners, which dry quickly and don't smear. Using an angled brush to press liner right into the lash line helps create the appearance of a naturally lush lash

Eyes: Define With Color

Pros say gray, plum and teal are the most flattering, age-defying colors. Gray works well as a light contour over your crease. A wash of plum flatters every skin tone. And teal has eye-brightening benefits.

Eyes: Max Out Mascara

Sparse lashes can age you, so for a fuller fringe, blink into the brush as you apply to deposit more mascara onto each lash. Also key: Do one coat of mascara on one eye, then the other, and repeat. Going back and forth allows for a little drying time between coats and helps prevent clumping. Plus, try this trick from reader Bobbi Zirbes to make lashes look extra-long: "Vaseline: It's amazing. I apply it to my eyelashes as a conditioner. It makes them appear thicker and longer by leaps and bounds."

Eyes: Highlight Your Brows

If your hair has highlights, your brows shouldn't be just one tone, either. Use two brow pencils, applying the darker one near the arch and the lighter one toward your nose. Doing that in light, feathering strokes opens up the eyes without a harsh filled-in look.

Eyes: Don't Shy Away From (Subtle) Shimmer

As you age, your eyes can appear more sunken. A few quick flicks of shadow can make them pop again. The professionals suggest starting with a neutral eye-brightening shade (think taupe or champagne) all over the lid—from lash line to brow bone. Then add a shadow in a slightly darker, shimmery hue, starting at the outer corner. Blend it in slightly and fade it right into the crease.

Eyes: Fake Fab Lashes with Falsies

On special occasions, use lash clusters at the corners of your eyes for a youthful lift. Hold the cluster with tweezers and dot it with lash glue. Then, looking down into a mirror—not straight ahead—push the base into the lash line. You need only two or three for major results.

Cheeks: Blend That Blush

Skin often dulls as we age. For a flush that looks natural, work a cream blush onto tops of your cheekbones.

Cheeks: Layer Two Faux Tans

Apply a creamy bronzer as a base over cheeks, then top cheekbones with a light dusting of powder bronzer for a finish that won't fade

Cheeks: Choose the Right Bronzer for a Sun-Kissed Glow

Women often skip bronzer, thinking it will look fake, but it's actually the secret to a youthful and warmer skin tone. The shade you pick is important: Never use a bronzer that is too dark if you have light skin (you'll look muddy) or too light if you have dark skin (it creates an ashy effect).

Lips: Gloss Over It

Adding a tiny dab of high-shine lip gloss right in the center of your bottom lip on top of your lip color is the easiest way to score a full pout. Light reflects off that area, creating the appearance of depth.

Lips: Use Lip Stain as Liner

Feel like your lips have deflated? You aren't imagining things: Lips thin over time. To make yours appear fuller, define the ridge of your lip line with a markerlike stain that matches your natural color. Using the tip of the marker, trace the perimeter of your mouth, then fill in (blot excess pigment with a tissue) to suggest a more voluptuous look.

Lips: Skip Matte

Opt for lip color formulas with added hydrators such as jojoba oil and hyaluronic acid. They moisturize dry lips—skin becomes drier with age—while adding a bit of shine and flattering plumpness to your smile.
