Wardrobe Essentials: For Men

Wardrobe Essentials: The Knitwear Edit

Recent years have seen men’s fashion grow steadily bolder and less restricted to conventions or codes. As such, patterned knitwear has become somewhat of a wardrobe staple. Just one killer piece can serve as the statement that will elevate your outfit, be that in a casual or formal setting. So we’ve had a look at this season’s killer knits that you can incorporate easily into your look, to make sure that you don’t miss out on what has really become more established and more essential than just a trend.

Stripes

Versatile and timelessly stylish. Great striped knitwear will transform any look. Breton stripes have been on trend since the dawn of fishing and although typically associated with Riviera styling, we have seen them used effectively as part of a great number of aesthetics.

For this look, we have echoed the traditional use of stripes and created a great summer holiday look. On sunshine-filled, warmer days, knitwear will work well during the evenings, and also in a more formal setting should the occasion call for it. We have paired this great jumper from Chinti & Parker’s capsule collection for Matches with some classic Reiss shorts in stone, mirroring the blue and red hues in the knitwear with these fantastic espadrilles from Rivieras and finishing the look with Bailey Nelson sunglasses and an anchor bracelet from Trashness.

Geometrics

There has been plenty of geometric-inspired knitwear this season, ranging from the simpler monochromatic styles courtesy of Alexander Wang to the heavily patterned Paul Smith pieces. Balance the boldness with a more understated approach to the rest of your look and drive forward the impact of the knit itself as a focal point.

When working around a monochromatic piece it’s good to add in a theme colour. We have opted for a purple accent with this look, styling a basic coloured tee which will pop underneath the pong-inspired knitwear. Simple chinos and sophisticated monks, both from AMI, tone down the jumper. And remember, it’s all in the details: the Uniform Wares watch with its gold fascia that matches the buckles of the shoes is a subtle touch of class.

Knockouts

Feeling brave? Want to make a killer statement? Look no further than our pick of instantly memorable knits. With so many designers looking to continually push boundaries, there is plenty of choice in more eccentric, even experimental patterned designs available to the everyman. Pick out focal colours from the most outrageous of pieces and work off these as the palette for the rest of your look. This will ensure somewhat of a grounding to knockout statement styles and keep you looking refined rather than a hot mess.

This Chinti & Parker piece is the perfect example and the grey and navy colourway has offered an easy theme applicable to the rest of the outfit: Oliver Spencer chinos, a simple white shirt from Gant and über-stylish tasselled loafers from Mark McNairy. We’ve finished things off with a Paul Smith straw trilby to add a touch of cool playful debonair.
