Hairstyles for winter

We round up the hottest hair colours and styles from international runways so that you can look chic this winter.

PlaitsBraids have always been considered ethereal, but this season it has taken an androgynous turn, thanks to cornrow braids. A style that was rampant in the ’90s and early 2000s, cornrows were spotted on runways at Alexander McQueen, Marchesa and DKNY shows. Here, the plait is braided tight on one side and the remaining hair is left loose.

Off-duty ballerina bunsThe Ballets Russes have provided the inspiration for this trend. These buns can be as neat or dishevelled as you like, but this season it’s slightly softer with finger-combed hair tied into a high ponytail and then twisted into a bun. Seen during Diane von Furstenberg’s show, and was also present at Prada, Altuzarra and Erdem, with hair scraped back into elegant chignons.

Sweeping fringesNot sure how a fringe would look on you or don’t want to go chop-chop? Then, you can try out this season’s sweeping side-partings that will help you achieve the look of bangs without fully committing. With this trend, it’s like hair swept across your forehead. This flattened side-parted style was seen at Alexander Wang, Giles and Marni, which gave the appearance of a helmet.

GrungeThis season is all about rich and nonchalant hair, paired with strong side parting. Models during the Rag & Bone and Missoni shows had a touch of punk to them with their hair looking like it had been carelessly run through. This look is all about attitude—a mischievous schoolgirl’s attitude.

Glossy ponytailsThe traditional pony got a makeover this season with it being worn fastened all the way down and tying elastics at equal intervals. During Valentino’s show, the ponytail was given texture by puffing each section by teasing with your fingers.

Wet-look and looseThis trend gives the appearance like you just got out of the shower or have just finished a strenuous workout, with androgynous slicked-back style stuck close to the head, as seen at Christopher Kane. But if you want a more dressy feel, then the wet-look hair with volume, worn super-sleek over the crown and loose and glossy at the back, as seen at Christian Dior would be preferable.

COLOURS AND CUTSThis season, chocolaty auburn hair hues, warm blondes, fiery reds or a combination—rich strawberry-blonde-come-auburn hair hue—is to-dye-for. Long, luscious hair is in this winter.
