Party's Over: 3 (Surprisingly Easy) Ways to Remove Glitter Nail Polish
The ball has dropped, you've partied like an A-lister (and have the undereye bags to prove it), and all that remains is your glittering New Year's Eve mani. Now, it's time to let even that go. (Is it just us or is 2015 already flying by?)
And with this being your first nail-related beauty move since the New Year began and all, let us help you nail the removal process like a champ—because we all know that taking off glitter polish is just plain tricky. If removal is a herculean feat in itself, doing so without damaging your nails might seem nearly impossible—or so goes this oft-told mani myth.
But truth be told, saying goodbye to glitter polish is a lot easier than it looks (as long as you've done your research). Whether you're a DIY kind of gal or prefer the convenience of a kit, here's how to remove glitter the no-fuss, nail-friendly way.
Use aluminum foil—yes, really.
Unconventional though it may sound, the aluminum foil method is seriously effective in removing even the most stubborn of glitter polishes. In addition to the foil, you'll need scissors, cotton balls, and a bottle of nail polish remover. (Hey, we did say it was unconventional!) To prep, cut ten squares of aluminum foil (the size of your palm is a good gauge) and set 'em aside. Then, take a cotton ball and saturate it completely with your polish remover. Place the soaked cotton ball squarely over your nail and wrap it completely in aluminum foil. Repeat on all ten fingers and let them sit for about five minutes. Then, unwrap the foil and remove the cotton balls to reveal clean, remarkably glitter-free digits! Just be sure to go for a gentle remover as to not dehydrate your tips.
Invest in a kit.
If the thought of cleaning up cotton balls just doesn't appeal (and you don't mind dropping a few extra dollars), consider investing in a glitter nail polish removal kit. They're made for one job and for one job only—erasing every trace of even the most sparkle-packed polishes. We're fans of Julep's Party's Over Glitter Nail Polish Removal Kit because it's just plain easy. The kit comes complete with rubber nail caps (which essentially take the place of aluminum foil in the method above), and pre-soaked nail polish remover pads. Simply pop the pads into the cap and place them over your fingertips. Sit back and relax for the next five minutes before pressing down and pulling the cap off your finger (this removes any remaining glitter residue). Toss the pads but save the caps for another go 'round—the kit comes with enough supplies to remove your next five glitter manis.
Opt for acetone.
If you're anything like us, you were taught to steer clear of acetone-based polish removers way back when you first started painting your nails. (The stuff is infamous for being harsh, drying, and smelly, to boot.) But, a tough job requires equally tough tools and acetone makes the removal process NBD. That said, for the sake of keeping your nails in tip-top shape, choose a formula with soothing properties, too. Sephora's Instant Remover is specially-designed to tackle glitter polish, so it's made with acetone, but it boasts nourishing ingredients like white peach and water lily extracts to compensate for the potency of the product. Just make sure to dip your tips for only ten seconds each. This stuff is so good, that's all you'll need.
